Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
This book has been misrepresented by a lot of people, particularly those who just read summaries from internet and news papers and suddenly feels qualified to comment about the book. Its not my place to judge but I feel strongly that people need to read the whole book before any opinions could be formed. The author tells her story like it is. It may not be a good way to tell the story but the fact is, it’s the truth. Her mother played a very important role in her up-bringing and descipline. Like all of us, Chua has had to find the good in her parents, particularly the good in their intentions (even when they aren’t easy to find).
Chua also talks about how she raised her two daughters with routines that included no dates, limited time to play instruments and other activities that were controlled. The two girls grew up very well while the other continued playing music and youngest taking a different direction. I will obviously not tell everything here as it will defeat the purpose.
There are a lots of parenting skills and methods and as the author was telling her story, I could easily relate with all the problems and challenges that all parents face in raising their children. The book is very funny and is the kind that is not easy to put down once you start reading it. Chua tell her story in an interesting way and one could easily fall in love with her the way she use words and explains some concepts in her books. She talks about the normal staff parents will ordinarily expect from their children.
To those wondering if this is a good buy, all I have to say is, buy and read it, that’s the only way you will know if the book is good or not. People like different things and what is good to me might be bad for you. I have personally rated the book 4/5 as I could easily relate to a lot of things that Chua talks about. She wrote honestly about her life the way it was and not the way she wanted it to be.
